Spirit of Prophecy
An introduction to the writings of Ellen G. White — the lesser light pointing to the greater light, the Word of God.
The Ministry of Healing
Overview
The Ministry of Healing is Ellen G. White's most comprehensive and beloved work on health and healing -- of both body and soul. It opens with the example of Jesus, the Great Physician, who during His ministry devoted more time to healing the sick than to preaching, and who cared for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. The book blends practical counsel on healthful living -- diet, exercise, fresh air, sunlight, water, rest, and trust in God -- with deep spiritual insight into the true source of all healing. It also speaks to caregivers, physicians, and every believer, showing that genuine ministry means meeting people's needs as Christ did, with compassion and love.
Purpose & Background
Ellen White wrote this book to set forth the Seventh-day Adventist philosophy of health and to present a balanced, Christ-centered understanding of healing -- countering both worldly extremes and false ideas circulating in her day. She intended it for both Adventist and non-Adventist readers, in America and overseas. Like Christ's Object Lessons, it was published partly to benefit the church's medical and charitable work: she directed that its proceeds help support the church's sanitariums and relieve their debts.
Best For
Anyone interested in healthful living from a biblical perspective, and every believer called to minister to the sick, the suffering, and the discouraged. Its practical chapters on diet, remedies, and the care of the sick sit alongside deeply spiritual chapters on the mind, faith, and the peace of Christ -- making it as much a devotional as a health manual. A natural companion to the health message of the Adventist faith.
Publisher
Pacific Press Publishing Association
First published in 1905 by Pacific Press, The Ministry of Healing was compiled by Ellen White's literary assistant Marian Davis from White's earlier writings on health, then amplified and rewritten. At the time of Ellen White's death in 1915, it was her only available book devoted to health. It remains the standard summary of the Adventist health message and one of her most widely circulated works.
