Godly Leadership

Wednesday's Reflection
Judges 4:4 — And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.
Israel had been oppressed for twenty years by a Canaanite king named Jabin when Deborah sat under a palm tree and judged the nation. People came to her from all over the country to have their disputes settled. She was a prophetess — someone who heard from God — and she led with the combination of wisdom and courage that the moment required. When the time came for Israel to fight back against Jabin's army, Deborah summoned a military commander named Barak and gave him God's instructions. He said he would only go if she went with him. She agreed, but told him plainly: because of this, the honour of the victory will go to a woman, not to you.
What stands out about Deborah's leadership is how completely it was rooted in her relationship with God rather than in any claim to authority. She did not assert herself. She simply occupied the position God had given her and did the work faithfully. She called out fear in Barak without embarrassing him. She led into a battle that the rest of the nation had been too afraid to start. And when the victory came, she broke into a song of praise — not claiming credit, but directing all glory to God. Her song in Judges 5 is one of the oldest pieces of Hebrew poetry in the Bible.
Godly leadership does not always look the way the culture expects. It does not always come from the person the crowd would have chosen. Deborah led at a time when the men of Israel were not stepping forward. She did not wait for permission or for the right title. She simply listened to God, spoke what she heard, and went where He sent her. That is always what godly leadership looks like at its core — not a position, but a response to a calling.
Prayer: Lord, raise up leaders in Your church who lead from their walk with You rather than from their position or title. Give us Deborah's courage — to step forward when it is needed, and to give You the glory when the work is done. Amen.
