The Fruit of the Spirit

Thursday's Reflection

Matthew 11:29 — Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Of all the fruit of the Spirit, meekness may be the most misunderstood. Many people think meekness means weakness. They imagine someone with no backbone, no convictions, no strength. But that is not what the Bible means. The Greek word prautes was often used for a powerful warhorse that had been trained. The horse still had great strength, but it responded to the rider’s slightest touch. Its power was under control. That is meekness. It is not the absence of power. It is power placed under a higher will.
Jesus described Himself this way. He stilled storms. He drove merchants from the temple. He raised the dead. Yet He called Himself meek. Not weak. Submitted. This is the kind of fruit the Spirit grows in us as we walk with Christ. Not the softness of someone with nothing to offer. But the strength of someone who has placed their power under God’s control.
Meekness shows up in ordinary life. It looks like the person who absorbs an insult without striking back. Not because they cannot defend themselves, but because they trust God with their reputation. It looks like the leader who listens more than they speak. The one who serves instead of demanding attention. It looks like the believer who accepts correction without bitterness and yields personal preferences for the good of others.
Meekness invites us to stop striving. To come to Christ. To take His yoke. And to discover that His burden really is light for the heart that no longer tries to carry everything alone.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are meek and lowly in heart. Teach us true meekness—not weakness, but power submitted to Your will. Help us to lay down our striving, take Your yoke, and find the rest that only comes from walking in step with You. Amen.
