The Weight of the Cross

Tuesday's Reflection
Luke 22:61-62 — And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
Peter had been so sure of himself. Just hours before, at the supper table, he had told Jesus he would go to prison with Him, even die with Him. He meant it. He was not pretending. But when the moment actually came — a cold courtyard, firelight, a servant girl's casual question — he folded completely. Three times he said he did not know the man. And then a rooster crowed.
What makes this moment so painful is that look. Jesus, being led away in chains, turned and looked at Peter. Not with anger — just a look. And Peter remembered. There is nothing quite like being seen by someone you just betrayed. Peter went out and wept bitterly. He did not go find Jesus and explain himself. He just wept. Sometimes that is the most honest thing you can do.
But the story does not end in that courtyard. After the resurrection, Jesus specifically sought Peter out. By the Sea of Galilee, over a charcoal fire — the same kind of fire Peter had been warming himself at when he denied Jesus — Jesus asked him three times: "Do you love Me?" Once for each denial. Not to humiliate him. To restore him. Every "yes, Lord" replaced a "I do not know the man." Peter had thought the cross was the end of everything. It turned out to be the beginning. The cross did not just forgive Peter's denial. It became the ground on which Peter's entire future was rebuilt.
Prayer: Lord, we have all been Peter — sure of ourselves one moment, failing the next. Thank You that You look at us the way You looked at him — not to condemn, but to call us back. Whatever we have denied, restore us. Amen.
