Hope

Saturday's Reflection

Hebrews 6:19 — Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.
This week we looked at what real hope is. Darlene Deibler Rose lost her husband and faced execution in a wartime prison camp, and held onto a hope anchored not in her circumstances — which offered nothing — but in the unseen God who was present with her in the dark. Fanny Crosby, blind from infancy, became the most joyful hymnwriter who ever lived, overflowing with a hope that did not depend on her ever seeing the light. The two disciples on the Emmaus road learned that what looked like the death of their hope was actually its fulfillment in disguise. And the Scriptures showed us a living hope born from the empty tomb, and a strength renewed in those who wait on the Lord.
The thread running through all of it is that Christian hope is an anchor, not a wish. It does not float on the surface of our circumstances, rising and sinking with them. It is fastened to something the storm cannot reach — the character of God, the certainty of His promises, the fact of the resurrection. That is why it holds when every natural reason for hope is gone. A woman in a prison cell, a child who would never see, disciples whose dream had died — all of them found that hope anchored in God does not slip, because the God it is anchored to does not move.
On this Sabbath, rest in that anchor. Whatever storm you are in, whatever you are waiting for, whatever grave you are standing beside — your hope reaches past all of it, into the very presence of God, where it is held sure and steadfast. You do not have to generate hope by force of will today. You only have to rest in the One your hope is fastened to. He is faithful, He is present, and He does not let go. Rest in the anchor of your soul.
"Our heavenly Father has a thousand ways to provide for us, of which we know nothing. Those who accept the one principle of making the service and honor of God supreme will find perplexities vanish, and a plain path before their feet." (Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 330)
Prayer: Father, thank You that our hope is an anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast, reaching into Your very presence. As we rest this Sabbath, we fasten our hearts to You. Hold us steady through every storm, and remind us that You have a thousand ways to provide of which we know nothing. Amen.
