Thursday's Reflection
Philippians 1:6 — Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
After a week of considering the call to finish faithfully, we come to a verse that keeps the whole idea from crushing us. Because if finishing well depended entirely on our own strength, our own consistency, our own ability to hold on to the very end, most of us would lose heart. We know ourselves too well. We know how often we have started strong and faltered, how weak our resolve can be, how real the danger of drifting is. If the outcome rested only on us, the call to endure to the end would be more terrifying than comforting. But Paul points us to a different and steadier foundation.
He is confident, he says, of one thing: that the God who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion. Notice who does the finishing. God began the work of salvation in us — we did not start it ourselves — and God is the one committed to completing it, all the way to the day of Christ. Our perseverance is real and necessary, but underneath it is a deeper reality: we are held. The same God who reached down and saved us is not going to abandon the project halfway. He finishes what He starts. Our finishing well is, at its root, God faithfully finishing His work in us.
This is the grace that makes endurance possible without despair. We run the race, yes, and we run it with patience and effort — but not in the anxious fear that it all depends on us. We run held by the hand of the One who is determined to bring us home. When we stumble, He lifts us. When we are weak, He carries us. When we fear we will not make it, He reminds us that our arrival was never resting on our strength alone. Finishing well is not the achievement of the exceptionally strong; it is the destiny of all who are kept by a faithful God. He will complete what He began.
Prayer: Father, thank You that finishing well does not rest on our strength alone. You began a good work in us, and You have promised to complete it. When we falter, hold us; when we are weak, carry us; and bring us safely to the day of Christ. We trust You to finish what You started. Amen.
