Sunday's Reflection
1 Peter 4:10 — As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
A steward is someone who manages something that belongs to another. He does not own the estate; he is entrusted with it, and one day he will give an account for how he handled it. The Bible says that is what every one of us is — a steward. Everything we tend to call "ours" is really on loan: our time, our abilities, our money, our health, our opportunities, the years of our lives. None of it originated with us, and none of it is coming with us. We are managers, not owners, and the question that hangs over every life is simply this: what are we doing with what we have been given?
This reframes how we think about a well-spent life. The world measures a life by what a person accumulates — how much they gathered, achieved, and held onto. The Bible measures it differently, by faithfulness — how well a person used what God entrusted to them. By that measure, a quiet, faithful life of small things well done can be a far greater success than a famous life of great things spent on self. The steward is not judged by how much he was given, but by what he did with it.
This week we look at what good stewardship of a life actually looks like — in a composer who signed his work over to God and saw his staggering musical gift as something to be spent entirely for God's glory, in a woman who retrained again and again so she could pour her life into caring for the dying, and in the Scriptures that call us to be faithful with our gifts, our time, and our very selves. The question for the week cuts to the heart: am I managing my one life as if it belongs to me, or to the God who gave it?
"Our time belongs to God. Every moment is His, and we are under the most solemn obligation to improve it to His glory." (Ellen G. White, Christ's Object Lessons, p. 342)
Prayer: Father, remind us that we own nothing and are entrusted with everything. Teach us to be faithful stewards of the gifts, the time, and the life You have given us, managing it all for Your glory rather than our own. Amen.
