Thursday's Reflection
Colossians 1:16-17 — For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible... all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
When we think of creation, we usually picture God the Father speaking the world into being. But the New Testament reveals something we might not expect from reading Genesis alone: it was through Jesus Christ that all things were made. Paul says plainly that by Him were all things created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. The same Jesus who was born in Bethlehem, who walked the roads of Galilee, who died on a Roman cross — that same Jesus is the Creator of everything that exists. The hands that were nailed to the cross are the hands that flung the stars into space.
This transforms how we understand both creation and the cross. The Creator did not remain distant from His creation. When it fell into sin and brokenness, He entered it Himself, becoming part of the very world He had made, in order to rescue it. The One who spoke light into darkness at the beginning stepped into the darkness of our world to become its light. There is no greater humility imaginable than the Maker of the universe being laid in a manger and later hung on a tree — by the very creatures His own hands had formed.
Paul adds one more staggering detail: by Him all things consist, or hold together. Christ is not only the One who made everything; He is the One who keeps it all in being right now. The atoms holding together, the planets keeping their orbits, the rhythms of life continuing moment by moment — all of it is sustained by His ongoing power. If He were to withdraw that power for an instant, everything would collapse into nothing. This means the world is not a machine God wound up and walked away from. It is upheld continually by the living Christ, the same Christ who loves us and gave Himself for us. The universe is held together by the hands of our Savior.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we are amazed that the Creator of all things became one of us to save us. Thank You that the same power that made and sustains the universe is the power of the One who loves us. Hold together our lives as You hold together the world. Amen.
