Friday's Reflection
Genesis 1:27 — So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
The creation account builds toward a climax, and it is not the sun or the stars or the oceans. It is us. When God made human beings, He did something He did not do with anything else in all creation: He made them in His own image. The animals were made "after their kind," but humanity was made after God's kind — bearing something of His own likeness. This is the source of every human being's dignity and worth. We are not just the most advanced animals; we are image-bearers of the living God, stamped with something of His character, capable of love, reason, creativity, and relationship with our Maker.
This truth has enormous consequences for how we see ourselves and one another. Every person you will ever meet — the powerful and the weak, the pleasant and the difficult, the stranger and the friend — bears the image of God. That is why every human life has value that does not depend on usefulness, achievement, or status. A newborn who has done nothing and an elderly person who can no longer do anything both carry the image of God, and are therefore precious. To disregard or degrade any human being is, in a real sense, to insult the God whose image they bear.
It also tells us who we are meant to be. Being made in God's image means we were designed for relationship with Him — to know Him, walk with Him, and reflect His character in the world. Sin has marred that image in all of us, but it has not erased it, and the whole work of salvation is God restoring His image in us through Christ, who is Himself the perfect image of God. To be fully human, in the end, is to become like Jesus. We were made in God's image at creation; we are remade into that image, day by day, as we walk with Him. That is the purpose written into our very design.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for making us in Your image and giving our lives a worth we could never earn. Help us to treat every person as an image-bearer of You, and restore Your image in us through Christ, until we reflect Him fully. Amen.
