Wednesday's Reflection

Psalm 148:5 — Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.
Anyone who has been awake before sunrise in the countryside knows the sound: as the first light begins to touch the horizon, the birds begin to sing. It starts with one or two, then swells into a full chorus of song rolling across the landscape — a phenomenon naturalists call the dawn chorus. Every morning, all over the world, as the earth turns toward the sun, creation greets the new day with song. The birds do not sing because anyone commanded them that morning or because they have thought it through. They sing because it is in their nature to sing, and the coming of the light draws it out of them.
There is something deeply instructive in this daily chorus. The Scriptures repeatedly picture all of creation praising its Maker — the heavens declaring His glory, the mountains and hills breaking forth into singing, the trees of the field clapping their hands, everything that has breath praising the Lord. Psalm 148 calls on sun and moon, stars and skies, mountains and trees, beasts and birds all to praise the name of the Lord, for He commanded and they were created. Creation worships simply by being what God made it to be, fulfilling its purpose, and in doing so it glorifies the One who made it. The dawn chorus is creation doing what it was made to do.
And this holds up a gentle question to us. If the birds greet each sunrise with song, and the whole creation instinctively glorifies its Maker, how much more should we — the ones made in God's image, the ones He redeemed at the cost of His Son? The creatures praise God without even knowing Him as we can know Him. We have far more reason to worship, for we know not only His power in creation but His love in salvation. Jesus once said that if His people fell silent, the very stones would cry out. Let us not leave it to the birds and the stones. Let us join the chorus of creation, greeting each new day with praise to the God who made us and saved us.
Prayer: Lord, all creation praises You simply by being what You made it to be. The birds greet the dawn with song, and the whole earth declares Your glory. We have even more reason to worship, for we know Your love. Put Your praise in our hearts each morning. Amen.
