Forgiveness And Reconciliation

Tuesday's Reflection

Ephesians 4:32 — And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Paul commands three actions: be kind, be tenderhearted, and forgive. These aren't mere suggestions for those who feel like it—they're imperatives for all believers. Kindness means treating others with compassion even when they don't deserve it. Tenderheartedness means maintaining soft hearts rather than growing calloused and bitter. Forgiving means releasing debts and letting go of offenses. The standard? "Even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
On December 20, 1974, ten-year-old Chris Carrier was kidnapped by David McAllister in Coral Gables, Florida. McAllister, a former employee fired by Chris's father, drove the boy to the Everglades where he stabbed him with an ice pick, shot him in the head, and left him for dead. Chris survived six days in the wilderness but lost sight in his left eye. Though police suspected McAllister, lack of evidence prevented prosecution. At age thirteen, Chris became a Christian and released his fear and anger to God. Twenty-two years later in 1996, a detective found the dying McAllister in a nursing home. When the elderly man confessed, Chris visited him, said "I forgive you—there's nothing between us except our newfound friendship," shared the gospel, and led his attacker to Christ. McAllister died three weeks later, forgiven.
God's forgiveness of us wasn't cheap. It cost Him His Son. Jesus bore the full weight of our sin, endured the cross, and suffered separation from the Father so we could be forgiven. When we forgive others, we're extending that same costly grace. We absorb the hurt rather than retaliating. We release the debt rather than demanding payment. We choose mercy over justice, forgiving because we've been forgiven.
Prayer: Father, soften our hearts toward those who have hurt us. Help us to be kind and tenderhearted, extending the same costly grace You've shown us. May Your forgiveness of us compel us to forgive others. Amen.
