Forgiveness And Reconciliation

🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional

Monday's Reflection

Matthew 6:14-15 — For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Jesus links God's forgiveness of us directly to our forgiveness of others. This is sobering. Immediately after teaching the Lord's Prayer, He clarifies this one petition: "Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors." The condition is explicit—if we refuse to forgive others, God will not forgive us. This doesn't mean we earn God's forgiveness through forgiving others. Rather, it means that someone who has truly grasped God's forgiveness will naturally extend it to others.
Consider the magnitude of what God has forgiven. Every sin we've ever committed—in thought, word, and deed—deserves eternal death. We've rebelled against our Creator, broken His commandments, and grieved His Spirit. Yet through Christ's sacrifice, God forgives completely and freely. Our slate is wiped clean, our guilt removed, our relationship with God restored. Now, against this backdrop of infinite mercy, how can we withhold forgiveness from others? Their offenses against us, however painful, are finite. God's forgiveness of us was infinite.
Jesus drives this point home in the parable of the unmerciful servant (Matthew 18:21-35). A servant who owed his master millions was forgiven the entire debt. Yet this same servant went out and choked a fellow servant who owed him a few dollars, demanding immediate payment. When the master heard, he reinstated the original debt and threw the ungrateful servant into prison. Jesus concludes: "So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses." Forgiveness isn't negotiable for those who claim to follow Christ.
Prayer: Lord, help us to grasp the depth of Your forgiveness toward us. When we're tempted to withhold forgiveness, remind us of how much we've been forgiven. Give us grace to forgive freely and completely. Amen.
