Loving God With All Our Heart

🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional

Friday's Reflection

Mark 12:30 — And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
When Mark records Jesus' quotation of the Shema, he includes all four dimensions: heart, soul, mind, and strength. Each addition enriches our understanding. Loving God with our mind means intellectual engagement—studying His Word, contemplating His character, thinking deeply about His ways. Christianity isn't anti-intellectual; it calls us to love God with renewed minds.
Loving God with our strength encompasses our physical lives and practical abilities. It means our bodies become instruments of worship, our work becomes service to Him, our daily routines reflect devotion. The carpenter honors God through craftsmanship; the mother through faithful care of children; the student through diligent study. Every legitimate activity, done for God's glory, becomes an expression of love.
Notice Jesus calls this "the first commandment." First in importance, first in priority, first in the order of our lives. When we love God supremely with heart, soul, mind, and strength, the second commandment—loving our neighbor—follows naturally. We cannot genuinely love others if we don't first love God. Our love for people will be twisted by self-interest, manipulated by need, or exhausted by demand unless it flows from our primary love for God. This comprehensive love—engaging every faculty, every dimension of our being—isn't achieved in a moment but cultivated over a lifetime. Yet it remains our highest calling and greatest privilege.
Prayer: Lord, we offer You our hearts in devotion, our souls in surrender, our minds in study, and our strength in service. Help us to love You with every part of our being, holding nothing back. Amen.
