Loving Our Neighbor

🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional

Saturday's Reflection

John 15:13 — Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Jesus defines the ultimate expression of love: laying down one's life for others. He wasn't speaking theoretically—within hours of these words, He would demonstrate this love on Calvary. The cross is love's supreme proof. God loved us so much that He gave His Son, and the Son loved us so much that He gave His life. This is the standard by which we measure all love.
This week we've explored loving our neighbor in practical ways. We learned from the Good Samaritan that our neighbor is anyone in need whom God brings across our path, regardless of ethnicity or worthiness. Through Trevor Ferrell's story, we saw that genuine love moves from words to deeds—from feeling sympathy to taking action. Jesus taught us that serving "the least of these" is serving Him personally. Through Irena Sendler's courageous rescue of Jewish children, we witnessed love that extends even to enemies, risking everything for those who could offer nothing in return. Paul reminded us that Christian community should be marked by warm affection and mutual honor, preferring one another's needs above our own. Now we come to love's highest expression: self-sacrifice.
Most of us won't literally die for others, but we're called to die daily—laying down our preferences, our comfort, our convenience for the sake of others. This is love in action: the parent sacrificing sleep to care for a sick child, the believer giving sacrificially to meet another's need, the friend canceling plans to sit with someone in crisis. Every time we put someone else's needs before our wants, we're laying down our lives in small ways. These daily deaths to self demonstrate whether our love is genuine. The world's love asks "What do I get?" Christ's love asks "What can I give?" Let us love not merely in word or speech, but in deed and in truth, following the One who gave everything for us.
"Christ's rule of life, by which every one of us must stand or fall in the judgment, is, 'Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.'" (Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 637)
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You demonstrated love's full meaning by laying down Your life for us. Teach us to love others with that same self-sacrificial spirit. May we die to self daily, putting others' needs before our own, and living lives marked by genuine, practical, costly love. Amen.
