Unity In The Body Of Christ

Friday's Reflection
Romans 15:5-6 — Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul prays that believers would be united not just for their own comfort but for a specific purpose: "that ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God." Unity isn't the ultimate goal; it's the means to a greater end. When the church speaks with one voice, when believers stand together in love and purpose, God receives glory and the world sees authentic Christianity.
Notice that this unity must be "according to Christ Jesus." We don't unite around political platforms, cultural preferences, or charismatic personalities. We unite around Christ and His gospel. This is the only unity worth pursuing—unity grounded in truth, centered on Jesus, empowered by the Spirit. False unity that compromises biblical teaching or tolerates serious sin is actually harmful. But genuine unity that celebrates Christ while embracing believers from every tribe and tongue powerfully testifies to God's reconciling work.
The book of Acts records how the early church amazed onlookers with their unity. They shared possessions, ate together daily, devoted themselves to apostolic teaching and prayer, and cared for one another's needs. The result? "And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved" (Acts 2:47). Their love for one another authenticated their message about God's love. Jesus Himself prayed, "That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me" (John 17:21). Our unity—or lack thereof—either confirms or contradicts the gospel we proclaim.
Prayer: God of patience and comfort, grant us unity according to Christ Jesus. May we speak with one voice to glorify You, demonstrating to the watching world the transforming power of Your gospel. Amen.
