Loving God With All Our Heart

Thursday's Reflection
Psalm 73:25 — Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
Asaph's declaration represents the pinnacle of human devotion: God alone satisfies. This psalm reveals Asaph's journey—he nearly lost his faith when he saw the wicked prospering while the righteous suffered. His feet almost slipped until he entered God's sanctuary and gained eternal perspective. Then he could declare that despite earthly inequities, God Himself was enough.
On October 28, 1949, twenty-two-year-old Jim Elliot wrote in his journal: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." At Wheaton College, the brilliant student was already choosing God as his supreme treasure, turning down promising careers to prepare for missionary work among unreached peoples. Elliot's friends wondered why he would leave America's "well-fed" churches for dangerous jungles. His parents questioned his decision to pursue Ecuador instead of safer ministry. But Elliot had discovered what Asaph learned in Psalm 73: when God becomes our supreme desire, everything else finds its proper place. In January 1956, Elliot and four other missionaries landed on a sandbar in Ecuador to make contact with the Huaorani people. They knew the risks—the tribe was known for violence against outsiders. On January 8, all five were killed by the very people they came to reach. Elliot was twenty-eight, leaving behind his wife Elisabeth and ten-month-old daughter. Yet his death bore fruit beyond imagination. His widow and other missionaries continued the work, and many of the Huaorani who killed the missionaries eventually came to Christ.
This is the challenge before us: Can we say with Asaph that God alone is our supreme desire? Not God plus comfort, God plus success, God plus reputation—but God Himself as our highest treasure? When He becomes our chief desire, everything else we possess or lack is measured against that one surpassing relationship.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to desire You above all earthly treasures. When prosperity tempts us to forget You or adversity tempts us to doubt You, remind us that You alone truly satisfy. Amen.
