Unity In The Body Of Christ

Wednesday's Reflection
Ephesians 4:2-3 — With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Unity doesn't maintain itself. Paul commands us to "endeavor"—to make every effort, to work diligently—to keep the unity the Spirit has created. Notice the virtues required: lowliness (humility), meekness (gentleness), longsuffering (patience), and forbearing one another in love (putting up with each other's faults). These are the practical tools for preserving unity.
Why does unity require such effort? Because we're sinful people with different backgrounds, preferences, and personalities. We misunderstand each other, offend each other, and sometimes genuinely disagree. Left to ourselves, we naturally fracture into factions based on doctrine, style, leadership, or simple personal preference. Unity requires intentionally choosing to extend grace, to assume the best, to overlook minor offenses, and to prioritize peace over being right.
"Forbearing one another in love" means tolerating imperfections and irritations for the sake of relationship. Not everything requires confrontation. Not every difference demands resolution. Sometimes love means letting things go, choosing unity over vindication. This doesn't mean ignoring serious sin or compromising biblical truth. But it does mean not allowing personality clashes, stylistic preferences, or minor theological disagreements to shatter fellowship. The bond of peace—the tie that binds believers together—must be guarded zealously. Satan knows that a divided church has no power; therefore maintaining unity is spiritual warfare. We must work at it deliberately, daily, with the same diligence we give to any important relationship.
Prayer: Father, give us the humility, patience, and love needed to maintain unity. Help us to overlook minor offenses, to extend grace freely, and to prioritize peace over personal preference. Guard us from the divisions Satan desires. Amen.
