Loving Our Neighbor

Wednesday's Reflection
Matthew 25:40 — And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Jesus teaches that how we treat "the least of these" is how we treat Him. When we feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, or visit the prisoner, we minister to Christ Himself. This truth should revolutionize how we view service to others. We're not merely performing charitable acts or accumulating good deeds—we're encountering Jesus in the faces of those who suffer.
The phrase "the least of these" refers to those society overlooks or devalues: the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, the refugee, the abandoned. Jesus identifies Himself with them so completely that serving them equals serving Him, and neglecting them equals neglecting Him. This is sobering. We might spend hours in worship, study Scripture diligently, and maintain orthodox doctrine—yet if we ignore the suffering around us, we're ignoring Christ. Religious activity is no substitute for practical love.
Notice Jesus doesn't ask about our theology or spiritual experiences at the judgment. He asks about concrete acts of mercy: Did you feed the hungry? Give drink to the thirsty? Welcome strangers? Clothe the naked? Care for the sick? Visit prisoners? These aren't works that earn salvation, but they're the inevitable fruit of genuine faith. A heart transformed by God's love cannot remain indifferent to human suffering. We love others because God first loved us, and proving that love is genuine requires action toward those in need.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, open our eyes to see You in the faces of those who suffer. Help us to remember that when we serve "the least of these," we serve You. Give us willing hearts to meet practical needs around us. Amen.
