Loving God With All Our Heart
🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional
Monday's Reflection
Deuteronomy 6:5 — And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Before Jesus quoted this commandment, Moses proclaimed it to Israel. The Hebrew word for "love" here isn't mere sentiment or emotion—it's covenant loyalty, wholehearted devotion, the commitment of one's entire being to God. The threefold emphasis—heart, soul, and might—underscores that God desires total, unreserved love.
"All your heart" speaks of our inner life, our affections and desires. "All your soul" encompasses our very essence, our life itself. "All your might" includes our strength, our resources, our practical energy. This isn't compartmentalized religion where God receives Sunday morning but not Monday's decisions. It's comprehensive devotion that touches every area of life.
Moses immediately follows this command with instructions to teach it diligently to children, to speak of it at home and on the road, when lying down and rising up. Love for God isn't merely private feeling—it shapes our daily routines, our conversations, our priorities. It becomes the air we breathe, the foundation upon which we build our lives, the lens through which we view everything else. When we love God with such totality, we discover that His commandments aren't burdensome restrictions but pathways to life. Wholehearted love transforms obedience from duty into delight.
Prayer: Lord, teach us to love You with undivided hearts. May our affection for You touch every area of life—our decisions, our relationships, our work, and our rest. Help us to make Your Word the foundation of our homes and our lives. Amen.
