Loving Our Neighbor

🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional

Monday's Reflection

Luke 10:27 — And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
When the lawyer asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life, Jesus pointed him back to the Law: love God completely and love your neighbor as yourself. The lawyer, hoping to justify himself, then asked, "And who is my neighbour?" He wanted to narrow the definition, to draw boundaries around who deserved his love. Perhaps he hoped Jesus would confirm that "neighbor" meant only fellow Jews, or only those who lived nearby, or only those who were worthy. Instead, Jesus expanded the definition far beyond what the lawyer expected.
Jesus responds with the parable of the Good Samaritan—a story so familiar we can miss its shocking nature. The religious leaders—the priest and Levite—saw the wounded man and passed by on the other side. They had their reasons: ritual purity laws, busy schedules, fear of robbers still lurking nearby. But a Samaritan, despised by Jews as a half-breed heretic, stopped and showed extravagant mercy. He bandaged wounds, provided his own transportation, paid for lodging, and promised to cover any additional expenses. The lawyer wanted to know who qualified as his neighbor; Jesus flipped the question to ask who acted as a neighbor.
The point is clear: our neighbor isn't defined by geography, ethnicity, religion, or worthiness. Our neighbor is anyone in need whom God brings across our path. The command to love our neighbor as ourselves means treating others with the same concern, compassion, and care we naturally show ourselves. When we're hungry, we feed ourselves; when we're hurting, we seek relief. Christian love does the same for others—not based on whether they deserve it, but simply because they need it and we have the capacity to help.
Prayer: Father, forgive us for the times we've narrowed the definition of "neighbor" to exclude those who make us uncomfortable. Help us to see every person as someone You love and to act as a neighbor to all in need. Amen.
