Unity In The Body Of Christ
🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional
Saturday's Reflection
1 Corinthians 1:10 — Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
Paul opens his letter to Corinth by immediately addressing their divisions. Reports had reached him that the church was fracturing into factions: "I am of Paul," "I am of Apollos," "I am of Cephas," "I am of Christ." They were dividing along lines of favorite teachers, each group claiming superiority. Paul's response is urgent: there must be no divisions. Be perfectly joined together—knit into one fabric, united in mind and judgment.
This week we've explored unity in Christ's body. We learned that the church is one body with many diverse members, all baptized by one Spirit. Through the Azusa Street Revival, we saw how the Holy Spirit can wash away human divisions of race and class when believers submit to His work. We discovered that unity requires deliberate effort—humility, patience, forbearance, and preferring others above ourselves. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Finkenwalde community showed us that authentic Christian fellowship is formed through shared devotion to Christ, mutual confession, and costly discipleship. Paul reminded us that our unity glorifies God and witnesses to the world. Now he warns against the deadly danger of division.
The Corinthian problem persists today. We divide over worship styles, theological minutiae, political affiliations, and personality preferences. We create camps and factions, each convinced of its own superiority. Yet Paul begs us by the name of Christ Himself to be united. This doesn't mean we never disagree or that we ignore serious error. But it means we don't let secondary issues destroy fellowship, and we don't elevate human leaders above Christ. The solution to division is always the same: fix our eyes on Jesus, remember we're all servants of the same Lord, and prioritize the gospel over our preferences. When believers truly grasp that we're one body purchased by one Savior's blood, petty divisions lose their power. Let us pursue the unity for which Christ prayed and died.
"We should cultivate a spirit of Christian fellowship and love. The people of God are to be one. There is but one Lord, and there is to be but one faith, one baptism." (Ellen G. White, Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 619)
Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive us for the divisions we've created in Your body. Help us to be perfectly joined together, united in mind and purpose around You alone. May we pursue unity with the same passion You showed in dying for us. Amen.
