Loving Our Neighbor

🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional

Sunday's Reflection

Mark 12:31 — And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
After commanding us to love God supremely, Jesus immediately adds the second greatest commandment: love your neighbor as yourself. These two commandments are inseparable—genuine love for God always overflows into love for people. We cannot claim to love the invisible God while hating the brother or sister we can see. True Christianity isn't merely vertical devotion to God; it's also horizontal compassion toward others.
This week we explore what it means to love our neighbor in practical, biblical ways. We'll see that our "neighbor" includes not just those who are easy to love, but also strangers, enemies, and those society overlooks. From the parable of the Good Samaritan to the command to love our enemies, from practical acts of mercy to laying down our lives for others, we discover that Christian love is active, sacrificial, and extends beyond comfortable boundaries. The test of our love for God is seen most clearly in how we treat the people around us—especially those who can offer us nothing in return.
"If we love Jesus, we will love to live for Him, to present our thank offerings to Him, to labor for Him. The very labor will be light. For His sake we will covet pain and toil and sacrifice." (Ellen G. White, Steps to Christ, p. 45)
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You demonstrated perfect love by laying down Your life for us. Teach us to love our neighbors—not just those who are like us or who can repay us, but all whom You bring across our path. Let our love be genuine, sacrificial, and reflective of Your own. Amen.
