Wisdom

Saturday's Reflection

Proverbs 9:10 — The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
This week we looked at what real wisdom is. Blaise Pascal, one of the most brilliant minds in history, discovered on a single night of fire that God is known by the humble heart, not won by the proud intellect — and he carried the memory of it sewn into his coat for the rest of his life. Lilias Trotter walked away from near-certain artistic fame because she had the wisdom to know what her one life was truly for, and spent forty hidden years in Algeria that still bear fruit today. And the Scriptures showed us Solomon asking for wisdom above riches, James promising that God gives wisdom freely to anyone who asks, and the unmistakable character of the wisdom that comes from above — pure, peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy.
The thread is the same throughout. Wisdom is not the same as intelligence, and it cannot be downloaded or earned by effort alone. It begins with the fear of the Lord — the humble recognition that He is God and we are not — and it grows as we ask Him for it and let Him shape our character. The wise are not the people who know the most. They are the people who begin in the right place, ask for help, put first things first, and let God produce in them a life that looks more and more like His Son. By that measure, a simple believer who fears God is wiser than the cleverest person who leaves Him out.
On this Sabbath, rest in the wisdom of God rather than straining after your own. You do not have to have everything figured out today. You do not have to solve every problem by the strength of your own mind. The One who holds all wisdom invites you to begin each day by seeking Him — and He gives generously, and never scolds. Lay down the weight of trying to be wise enough on your own, and rest in the God who is the source of all true wisdom.
"Consecrate yourself to God in the morning; make this your very first work. Let your prayer be, 'Take me, O Lord, as wholly Thine. I lay all my plans at Thy feet. Use me today in Thy service.'" (Ellen G. White, Steps to Christ, p. 70)
Prayer: Father, thank You that You are the source of all wisdom and that You share it freely. As we rest this Sabbath, we lay our plans and our problems at Your feet. Begin each new day in us by making us seekers of Your wisdom first. Amen.
