Tuesday's Reflection
Hebrews 11:10 — For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
Abraham spent his whole life as a stranger in a land that God had promised him. He never owned it. He lived in tents, moving from place to place, a wanderer with no permanent address, dwelling as a foreigner in the very country that had been pledged to his descendants. By ordinary standards, this looks like a man who never quite arrived, who spent his life waiting for something he never received. But Hebrews tells us Abraham was not disappointed, because his eyes were fixed on something far beyond a piece of land. He was looking for a city — not an earthly one, but the eternal city whose builder and maker is God.
That is what allowed Abraham to live as a pilgrim without bitterness. He understood that he was not home yet, and that the tents he lived in were never meant to be permanent. The whole shape of his life — the willingness to leave, to wander, to wait, to hold everything loosely — flowed from a settled conviction that his true home lay elsewhere, in a city God Himself was building. He was a man passing through, and he knew it. That knowledge did not make him careless about this life; it made him free in it.
Hebrews says that all the heroes of faith died this way — confessing that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth, looking for a better country, a heavenly one. This is the heart of an eternal perspective. We are not citizens of this world who occasionally think about heaven; we are citizens of heaven who are currently passing through this world. When we truly grasp that the tents we live in now are temporary, and that God is preparing an eternal city for us, it changes how we hold everything here. We stop trying to build a permanent home out of materials that were never meant to last, and we start living like people who are headed somewhere better.
Prayer: Lord, help us to live as Abraham did — as pilgrims passing through, with our eyes fixed on the eternal city You are building. Free us from trying to make a permanent home of this temporary world, and keep us headed toward the better country. Amen.
