Friday's Reflection
Colossians 3:2 — Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Paul gives a command here that sounds simple but takes a lifetime to obey: set your mind on things above. The word "set" implies effort and intention — this is not something that happens automatically. Left to itself, the human mind naturally settles on things below: our circumstances, our possessions, our worries, our ambitions, the endless concerns of earthly life. Setting the mind on things above is a deliberate act, a daily redirecting of our attention away from the temporary and toward the eternal. It is a discipline, not a mood.
Notice that Paul is not telling us to become so heavenly-minded that we are no earthly good. The same letter goes on to give very practical instructions about marriage, family, work, and ordinary relationships. The point is not to escape earthly life but to live it from a different vantage point. When your mind is set on things above, you do your earthly work better, not worse — because you do it free from the anxious grasping that comes from thinking this world is all there is. The person whose treasure is in heaven can give generously, love freely, and let go gracefully, because their security does not depend on what they can accumulate here.
This is the practical outworking of everything we have considered this week. An eternal perspective is not a feeling that descends on us at religious moments; it is a mindset we deliberately cultivate, day after day, choosing where to fix our attention. We set our minds on things above when we read God's Word, when we pray, when we remember that we are pilgrims passing through, when we deliberately turn from the endless pull of earthly concern to consider what is eternal. Slowly, this reorients the whole person. We begin to want what God wants, to value what He values, and to live each ordinary day in the light of forever.
Prayer: Lord, help us to set our minds on things above — not as an escape from this life, but as the truest way to live it. Day by day, redirect our attention from the temporary to the eternal, until our hearts are anchored where our treasure truly is. Amen.
