Eternal Perspective

Sunday's Reflection
2 Corinthians 4:18 — While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Almost everything that worries us, drives us, and consumes our energy belongs to a world that is passing away. The job, the bank balance, the house, the reputation, the thousand daily concerns that feel so urgent — Paul calls all of it temporal, meaning temporary, here for a moment and then gone. And he sets against it another whole category of reality: the things that are not seen, the things that are eternal. The great tragedy of most human lives is that we pour ourselves entirely into the temporary while barely glancing at the eternal. We spend our one life chasing things we cannot keep.
An eternal perspective does not mean ignoring this life or pretending its troubles are not real. Paul was not a man who avoided hardship — he had been beaten, shipwrecked, and imprisoned. It means seeing this life in its true proportion, against the backdrop of forever. When you know that the things you can see are fleeting and the things you cannot see are lasting, it changes what you fear, what you chase, and what you are willing to sacrifice. The person who lives for eternity holds the things of this world loosely, because they know none of it is coming with them.
This week we look at what it means to live with eternity in view — in a wealthy young cricket star who gave away an entire fortune because he knew it would not last, in a young doctor who faced terminal cancer in his thirties and stared death down with the hope of heaven, and in the Scriptures that call us to set our minds on things above. The question for the week is one that reorders everything: am I spending my one life on what is temporary, or on what is eternal?

Prayer: Father, lift our eyes from the temporary things that consume us to the eternal things that truly last. Teach us to hold this world loosely and to spend our one life on what will outlast it. Give us an eternal perspective. Amen.
