The Weight of the Cross

Thursday's Reflection
Luke 23:42-43 — And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
There were two criminals crucified alongside Jesus that day. One of them mocked Him along with the crowd — if you're really the Messiah, save yourself and us. The other one rebuked him. He said, we deserve what we're getting, but this man has done nothing wrong. Then he turned to Jesus with one of the simplest prayers in the Bible: "Lord, remember me."
He didn't ask to be taken down from the cross. He didn't promise to live a better life. He had no time left to prove anything, no good deeds to offer, no religious credentials. Just a name — Lord — and a request — remember me. And Jesus said yes. Today. Paradise. You're coming with Me. No waiting list, no probation period, no "let's see how you do." The thief's entire theological education happened in the last hours of his life, hanging next to the Son of God.
This exchange matters because it strips away every idea that salvation is something we earn by being good enough for long enough. The thief had nothing to offer and everything to lose. What he had was honest recognition — this man is innocent, I am not, and He is the only hope I have. That recognition, that simple turning toward Jesus, was enough. It has always been enough. The cross was never about rewarding the deserving. It was always about rescuing the honest.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we come to You the way the thief did — with nothing to offer except honesty about who we are and faith in who You are. Remember us. That is all we ask. Amen.
