Friday's Reflection

1 John 3:1 — Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
John stops mid-sentence and says "behold" — look at this, pay attention, do not miss it. What he wants us to see is something so simple it is easy to walk past: the Father has loved us enough to call us His children. Not servants. Not followers. Not admirers from a distance. Children. Sons and daughters. With all the access and belonging and security that those words carry. That is not a minor distinction. The difference between a servant and a child is the difference between performance and inheritance.
A servant earns their place by what they do. A child belongs by virtue of who their father is. When a servant fails, they fear being dismissed. When a child fails, they run to their father. The whole posture is different — not because the child is better, but because the relationship is different. John is saying that this is exactly what God has made us. Not people trying to earn their way into His good graces, but people who already belong to Him by His own declaration of love. The identity is not provisional. It is not on probation. It was given, freely, by a Father who decided to call us His own.
John adds something honest though — the world will not always recognise this identity. It did not recognise Jesus, and it will not always recognise what He has placed in us. That means there will be days when nothing about your circumstances confirms that you are a beloved child of God. The bills, the relationships, the failures — none of it will feel like sonship. On those days, this verse is not a feeling to chase. It is a fact to stand on. Behold what manner of love. Not what manner of feeling. Love. Given. Settled. Yours.
Prayer: Father, on the days when nothing around us confirms who You say we are, help us to stand on what You have declared rather than what we feel. We are Your children. That does not change. Let that be enough today. Amen.
