Wednesday's Reflection
Ephesians 6:11 — Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Wang Mingdao was one of China's most respected Christian leaders in the twentieth century. He led an independent church in Beijing — independent meaning he refused to register it with the Communist government's state-controlled religious body, the Three-Self Patriotic Movement. He believed that registration would require compromises he was not willing to make. In 1955, he was arrested, and after months of psychological pressure and sleep deprivation, he broke. He signed a confession calling himself a counter-revolutionary and was released. He later described that period as the worst of his life — not the imprisonment, but the capitulation. He said he had put on the armour, then taken it off at the worst moment.
In 1958 he recanted his confession, declared it false, and turned himself back in to the authorities. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. He served twenty years before being released due to age and failing health in 1979. When he came out, people asked him how he had survived two decades in prison. He said he had simply repeated to himself one phrase every day: "I am Wang Mingdao, and I will not betray my Lord." Not theology. Not elaborate spiritual strategy. Just his own name, and a refusal. He died in 1991, still in China, still unregistered, still holding the line. He was ninety-one years old.
The armour of God is not decorative. It is functional — designed for a fight. Each piece has a specific purpose: truth against deception, righteousness against accusation, faith against doubt, salvation against despair, the Word against every lie the enemy brings. The person who puts it on and keeps it on does not win because they are stronger. They win because they are standing in something that is stronger than they are.
Prayer: Lord, help us to put on the whole armour — not just the pieces that are comfortable, but all of it. And when the pressure comes to take it off, remind us what Wang Mingdao said every day: we belong to You, and we will not betray our Lord. Amen.
