Living by the Word

Friday's Reflection

Psalm 19:7 — The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
God’s Word is flawless, transforming lives and imparting wisdom. The simple find understanding, and sinners find conversion through its truth. Unlike human wisdom that fades, Scripture remains sure, reliable, and eternal in its effect.
John Wesley, founder of Methodism, experienced this transforming power firsthand on May 24, 1738. Though he was already an ordained minister and had even served as a missionary, Wesley felt spiritually empty and uncertain of his salvation. That evening, he reluctantly attended a small meeting on Aldersgate Street in London, where someone was reading from Martin Luther's preface to Romans. As the reader explained how God changes the heart through faith in Christ, Wesley later wrote: "I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death."
That single encounter with Scripture—not in a grand cathedral but in a humble prayer meeting—ignited a fire that would never be extinguished. Wesley began preaching with newfound passion and authority, traveling over 250,000 miles on horseback throughout Britain, often preaching three or four times a day. The perfect law of the Lord, working through his transformed heart, brought conversion to coal miners, factory workers, prisoners, and even nobility. Drunkards became sober, thieves became honest, and entire communities were lifted from despair. The Methodist movement spread like wildfire, eventually crossing the Atlantic and transforming millions of lives. All because one man's heart was converted by the sure testimony of God's living Word.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the perfection of Your Word that renews our hearts and makes us wise. Let its truth shape our thoughts and actions today. May we, like Wesley, be set aflame by Your Spirit and become instruments of transformation through Your living Word. Amen.
