The God Who Provides

Tuesday's Reflection

1 Kings 17:16 — And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah.
The widow of Zarephath had reached the end of her resources—one last handful of meal, one final drop of oil, enough for one more meal before she and her son died of starvation. Yet when the prophet Elijah asked her to feed him first, she obeyed despite her desperate circumstances. Her obedience unlocked a miracle: the meal barrel never emptied, the oil cruse never ran dry. God multiplied her sacrifice, transforming scarcity into abundance through faith expressed in action.
This story reminds us that divine provision often begins where human resources end. God does not ask for what we cannot give, but He does invite us to surrender what little we have in faith. The miracle did not occur before the widow’s act of obedience but through it. Each time she reached into the barrel, she found enough for that day—and that was enough. God’s provision was not a warehouse of excess but a daily supply, teaching her to depend on Him moment by moment. In the same way, our faith deepens when we learn to trust God not for tomorrow’s abundance, but for today’s portion. His faithfulness never fails, but it is revealed one act of obedience at a time.
Sometimes God allows our resources to run low not to punish us, but to prepare us—to show us that His Word is more dependable than our savings, our strength, or our plans. When we give even in uncertainty, we declare that He is our source. The Lord who sustained Elijah and the widow still sustains His people today. Whether it is strength in weakness, peace in crisis, or provision in lack, God’s supply always matches the need of the hour. Faith does not guarantee a life without difficulty, but it ensures that in every difficulty, His grace will be sufficient and His promises sure.
Prayer: Lord, help us to trust You with our last handful of meal and final drop of oil. Teach us the joy of giving even in scarcity, and show us that Your provision never fails those who act in faith. Multiply our obedience into blessings for others. Amen.
