Hope of Christ's Return
🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional
Saturday's Reflection
2 Peter 3:13 — Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
The hope of Christ's return is not only about escape from a broken world but about the complete renewal of creation. God promises a new heavens and a new earth where righteousness will dwell forever, where sin, pain, sorrow, and death will never rise again. This is the Christian's ultimate longing: not just deliverance from this fallen world, but the restoration of all things to God's original design. The new earth will not be some ethereal, ghostly existence but a real, tangible world—more real and more beautiful than anything we have ever known. It will be Eden restored and glorified, where the redeemed will live, work, explore, and worship in perfect harmony with God and one another for all eternity.
C.S. Lewis captured this longing beautifully when he wrote about our deep, persistent ache for something we've never fully experienced in this world—a nostalgia for a place we've never been. He observed that if we find within ourselves desires that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world. This explains why even in moments of greatest earthly joy—a beautiful sunset, a reunion with loved ones, a moment of perfect peace—we feel a bittersweet longing for something more. That longing is not a flaw; it is a compass pointing us toward our true home. Every glimpse of beauty here is merely a shadow of the glory that awaits in the new earth, where righteousness will dwell and God's presence will fill all things.
John, in his Revelation vision, saw this new earth and heard God declare, "Behold, I make all things new" (Revelation 21:5). Not "I repair all things" or "I patch up the old," but "I make all things new." The groaning of creation under the curse of sin will finally end, and the world will be gloriously recreated. Until that day, we live as pilgrims with our hearts set on the world to come. We plant gardens knowing they will wither, build homes knowing they will decay, and love people knowing we will part—all the while holding fast to the promise that one day, in the new earth, everything beautiful will last forever, and every good thing will be ours in fullness without the shadow of loss.
"The coming of the Lord is nearer than when we first believed. The great controversy is soon to close, and every soul will be found either holy or unholy, pure or impure." (Ellen G. White, Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, p. 48)
Prayer: Creator God, thank You for the promise of a new heavens and new earth where righteousness shall dwell forever. Keep us watchful and faithful until that glorious day. May the hope of restoration sustain us through every trial and loss, and may we live as citizens of heaven even while we walk this earth. Come quickly, Lord Jesus. Amen.
