Hope of Christ's Return

Thursday's Reflection
Hebrews 10:37 — For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.
Though Christ's return may seem delayed to our impatient hearts, His timing is perfect. God's promises are absolutely sure, and what we perceive as delay is actually an expression of divine mercy, giving more people time to repent and find salvation. The apostle Peter reminds us that "the Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). Every day that passes is another opportunity for lost souls to hear the gospel and respond. Waiting requires patience and endurance, but the certainty of His coming sustains us through seasons of discouragement and doubt.
Like farmers who plant seed and wait patiently for harvest, trusting the process even when they cannot see the growth beneath the soil, believers trust God's timing even when we cannot see His purposes unfolding. During the dark years of apartheid in South Africa, Christians endured systemic injustice, brutal oppression, and generations of suffering. Yet in the face of violence and discrimination, they sang songs of hope in Christ's return. Their faith was not placed in political systems, economic reform, or human justice—it was anchored in the promise of Jesus. They gathered in humble churches and sang, "We are marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion," knowing that earthly Zion might fail them but heavenly Zion never would.
Eventually, political change came to South Africa, and the apartheid system fell. But believers understood something deeper: even greater than political freedom was the assurance that ultimate and perfect justice will come when Christ returns. Every wrong will be made right, every tear will be wiped away, and every act of faithfulness in the face of oppression will be rewarded. The "little while" spoken of in Hebrews may feel long to us, but in God's eternal perspective, it is indeed brief. The One who promised to come will come, and He will not delay beyond the appointed time. Our calling is to remain faithful, to keep proclaiming the gospel, and to trust that His timing is always right.
Prayer: Father, help us to wait with patience and faith. Strengthen us when the wait feels long, and remind us that Your timing is always right. May we use this time to serve others and prepare our hearts for Your coming. Give us grace to trust Your mercy in the delay and to work urgently for the salvation of souls. Amen.
