Living by the Word

Saturday's Reflection
Isaiah 55:11 — So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void.
God’s Word never fails. It always accomplishes His purposes, even when we cannot see the results. Like seed planted in soil, it may take time to grow, but it will bear fruit in due season. Our task is to sow the Word faithfully and trust God for the harvest.
In 1947, a young Scottish evangelist named Eric Liddell (Olympic gold medalist) was dying in a Japanese internment camp in China during World War II. Weak from malnutrition and illness, he spent his final days teaching Scripture to children in the camp, writing out Bible verses on scraps of paper for them to memorize. He died at age 43, seemingly forgotten, his mission work cut short.
But God's Word did not return void. Decades later, those children—now elderly—testified how Liddell's Scripture lessons sustained them through years of suffering and shaped their entire lives. One became a missionary doctor, another a pastor, several became teachers who passed the gospel to the next generation. In 2008, at a memorial service in China, over 400 people gathered to honor Liddell's legacy. Many were spiritual descendants of those who heard God's Word from his lips in that prison camp. What seemed like a tragic end was actually seed-planting that bore fruit for generations. Every verse Eric Liddell shared, even in his weakness, accomplished exactly what God intended.
“If studied and obeyed, the Word of God works in the heart, subduing every unholy attribute.”
(Ellen G. White, Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 100)
Prayer: Lord, let Your Word dwell richly in our hearts. Transform us through its power and make our lives a living testimony of obedience to You. Amen.
