The God Who Provides

Thursday's Reflection

John 6:11 — And Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
Five barley loaves and two small fish—a boy’s lunch became a feast for thousands when placed in Jesus’ hands. The miracle began not with abundance but with surrender. The child gave everything he had, trusting Christ to do something with his small offering. Jesus blessed what was given, multiplied what was offered, and distributed more than enough. The miracle teaches us that God specializes in multiplication—taking our inadequate resources and making them sufficient for His purposes.
Charles Spurgeon once told a story about his grandfather, James Spurgeon, a poor country pastor with a large family and little income. When the family’s only cow died—their main source of milk for the children—his wife was deeply troubled. But James said calmly, “God has promised to provide, and I believe He could send us fifty cows if He pleased.” That very day, a group in London—unknown to him—was gathering funds to help struggling pastors. When their donations were distributed, a small balance remained. One man proposed sending it to James Spurgeon, and others added more until the gift totaled twenty pounds. The next morning, the day after the cow died, the money arrived in the mail—exactly what the family needed. The timing left no doubt: God had provided.
When we place our small resources, our needs, and even our losses in God’s hands, He provides in ways we cannot predict. Sometimes the miracle comes as multiplied bread; other times it arrives as a letter in the post. The same Lord who fed the five thousand still delights to meet the needs of those who trust Him fully.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, take our small offerings and make them much in Your hands. Teach us to give with joy, to trust without fear, and to rest in the assurance that Your provision is always timely and sufficient. Amen.
