Compassion for the Poor and Needy

🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional

Sunday's Reflection

Proverbs 19:17 — He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.
There's a striking idea in this verse: when you help a poor person, you're actually lending to God Himself — and He keeps the account. It means no act of compassion is ever truly unnoticed or wasted. The meal you provided, the bill you quietly covered, the time you gave to someone who could never repay you — God sees all of it, and treats it as done to Him.
This week is about compassion — not as a feeling, but as something we actually do. It's easy to feel sorry for people in need. It's much harder to step in and help: to give time, money, attention, effort. Yet that's exactly what God calls us to, and the people who give themselves away almost always discover they received more than they gave.
"As you open your door to Christ's needy and suffering ones, you are welcoming unseen angels. You invite the companionship of heavenly beings. They bring a sacred atmosphere of joy and peace." (Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 639)
This week's question: Who around you needs practical help — and what's stopping you from giving it?
Prayer: Father, open our eyes to the needs around us, and open our hands to meet them. Help us to see You in the people we serve. Amen.
