Sunday's Reflection
Genesis 1:1 — In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
The Bible opens not with an argument for God's existence but with a simple, majestic announcement: in the beginning, God created. Everything that follows in Scripture rests on this first sentence. Before there was anything else, there was God, and out of nothing He spoke the universe into being. This is where the whole story starts, and it settles the most basic question a human being can ask — where did all this come from, and where did I come from? The answer is not chance or accident, but a Creator who made it all on purpose.
This matters more than it may first appear. If we are the product of a Creator, then we are not cosmic accidents adrift in a meaningless universe — we are made, on purpose, by Someone. Our lives have an Author, and therefore a meaning. The same God who flung the stars into space and filled the oceans with life also formed each of us. And because He is Creator, He has a claim on us that no one and nothing else does. We belong to the One who made us.
This week we look at the God who created — in the astonishing design woven into a single migrating butterfly, in a brilliant astronomer who felt he was thinking God's thoughts after Him as he traced the paths of the planets, and in the Scriptures that show us creation declaring God's glory and Christ Himself as the Maker of all things. The question for the week is worth sitting with: if the whole universe was made on purpose by a Creator, what does that mean for the purpose of your one small life within it?
"Nature and revelation alike testify of God's love. Our Father in heaven is the source of life, of wisdom, and of joy." (Ellen G. White, Steps to Christ, p. 9)
Prayer: Creator God, before there was anything, there was You — and by Your word all things came to be. Help us to see Your hand in the world You made, and to remember that we, too, are Your handiwork, made on purpose and loved. Amen.
