Justice and Mercy

Sunday's Reflection

Micah 6:8 — He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
This might be the simplest summary of a good life in the whole Bible. What does God want from you? Three things: do what's right, treat people with mercy, and stay humble before Him. Not complicated theology, not endless rules — just justice, mercy, and humility, lived out day by day.
The hard part is holding justice and mercy together. Justice says, "Stand up for what's fair." Mercy says, "Be kind, even when it isn't deserved." On the surface they can feel like opposites. But in God's character they never conflict — they're two sides of the same love. This week we'll look at how to live with a strong sense of fairness and a soft heart at the same time. Most of us lean too far one way: harsh in the name of justice, or letting everything slide in the name of mercy. God calls us to both.
"God is a God of truth. Justice and mercy are the attributes of His throne. He is a God of love, of pity and tender compassion." (Ellen G. White, God's Amazing Grace, p. 74)
This week's question: Do you lean toward harsh justice or easy mercy — and what would balance look like for you?
Prayer: Father, give us both a strong sense of justice and a tender heart of mercy. Help us walk humbly with You. Amen.
