Compassion for the Poor and Needy

🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional

Saturday's Reflection

Proverbs 19:17 — He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.
This week we looked at compassion as something we do, not just something we feel. Mother Teresa walked into the slums of Calcutta and spent her life serving "the poorest of the poor," convinced she was touching Christ Himself in every dying and forgotten person. Paul Brand chose the patients everyone else recoiled from, rebuilding the crippled hands of leprosy sufferers and restoring the dignity society had stripped away. And the Scriptures showed us the Samaritan who stopped, the early church where no one went without, and James's blunt warning that faith without action is no faith at all.
The thread running through all of it: real compassion costs something, and it always gives back more than it costs. When we help "the least of these," we serve Christ directly. When we pour ourselves out, our own darkness turns to light. And when we give cheerfully, we discover the strange arithmetic of God's kingdom — that giving leads to receiving, usually in ways we never anticipated.
On this Sabbath, rest in the One who gave everything for us. Our compassion for others is only an echo of His compassion toward us. As you rest today, let your heart soften toward the people around you who are struggling — and let the coming week be one where that softness turns into action.
"When the nations are gathered before Him, there will be but two classes, and their eternal destiny will be determined by what they have done or have neglected to do for Him in the person of the poor and the suffering." (Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 637)
Prayer: Father, thank You for Your endless compassion toward us. This week, make us people who don't just feel for the needy, but actually help them — serving You by serving them. Amen.
