Justice and Mercy

Tuesday's Reflection

Proverbs 21:3 — To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
Here's something worth sitting with: God says He'd rather see you treat people fairly than watch you perform religious rituals. You can attend every service, give generously, and pray long prayers — and still miss what God cares about most, if you're treating people unjustly the rest of the time. God isn't impressed by religious performance disconnected from how we actually live.
The prophet Amos hammered this to ancient Israel. Their worship was magnificent — beautiful music, impressive offerings — but in the marketplace they cheated the poor and underpaid their workers. God's response was blunt: I hate your religious festivals; I won't accept your offerings. What He wanted instead was justice "rolling down like waters."
The same warning lands on us. Real worship isn't only what happens on Sabbath morning. It's how we treat the cashier, the employee, the person who can do nothing for us. Fair dealing is worship. Honest relationships are worship. A faith that's careful about ceremony but careless about justice has things exactly backwards.
Prayer: Lord, don't let our religion become a performance. Make our everyday fairness toward people the truest worship we offer You. Amen.
