Being Light and Salt

Tuesday's Reflection
Colossians 4:6 — Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
Salt was precious in Paul's day — it preserved food, healed wounds, and brought out flavor. When Paul says to season your speech with salt, he means: let your words preserve relationships rather than damage them, bring healing rather than harm, add richness rather than bitterness. Gracious words are chosen carefully and spoken with the other person's good in mind.
This is harder than it sounds, because words are cheap and quick. It costs nothing to fire off a sarcastic reply, to join in gossip, to say the cutting thing that gets a laugh. Salt-seasoned speech takes more thought and more self-control. It means pausing to consider how a word will land before we say it.
And notice Paul connects this to knowing "how ye ought to answer every man." How we speak shapes whether people will ever listen to what we believe. Harsh, careless words slam doors. Gracious, thoughtful words open them. Often the most powerful witness isn't a clever argument but a kind word spoken at the right moment to someone who expected unkindness. People remember how we made them feel long after they forget what we actually said.
Prayer: Lord, season our words with grace today. Let what we say bring healing and open doors rather than slam them shut. Amen.
