Being Light and Salt

Friday's Reflection
Mark 9:50 — Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
Jesus warns about salt that's lost its saltiness. In His day, salt was often mixed with other minerals, and over time the real salt could leach away, leaving a white powder that looked like salt but did nothing — no preserving, no flavor. It was useless. Jesus' point is sobering: a Christian who loses what makes them distinctive becomes spiritually useless too.
The "saltiness" Jesus means isn't just outward behavior — it's a transformed heart that naturally shows up in how we live. It's possible to keep all the religious forms — attendance, vocabulary, routines — while quietly losing the inner reality: the love, the joy, the genuine connection with Christ that made us different in the first place. From the outside it can still look like salt. But the savor is gone.
The danger is gradual. Nobody decides one day to lose their saltiness. It seeps away slowly through neglected prayer, cooling love, creeping cynicism, going through the motions. The remedy is equally gradual and within reach: staying close to Christ, keeping the heart soft, tending the inner life that gives the outer life its flavor. "Have salt in yourselves," Jesus says — guard the real thing inside, and the influence will take care of itself.
Prayer: Lord, keep us from going through religious motions while losing our hearts. Keep us genuinely salty — full of real love and joy that comes from staying close to You. Amen.
