Monday's Reflection
Job 12:7-9 — But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee... Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?
Each autumn, across North America, millions of monarch butterflies begin one of the most astonishing journeys in all of nature. These fragile creatures, weighing less than a paper clip, fly as far as three thousand miles to spend the winter in a few small groves of fir trees high in the mountains of central Mexico. They cross open country, mountains, and cities to reach a place most of them have never been. And here is the wonder: the butterflies that make the journey south are not the same ones that flew north the previous spring. Several generations have lived and died in between. The ones that arrive have never seen the destination, yet somehow they find the exact same forests their great-great-grandparents left.
No one fully understands how they do it. Scientists have found that monarchs navigate using the position of the sun and a kind of internal compass sensitive to the earth's magnetic field, but the precision of it — a brain smaller than a grain of rice guiding a creature to a pinpoint location across a continent — defies easy explanation. Job's ancient invitation is exactly right: ask the beasts, ask the birds, and they will teach you. Look closely at almost any living thing and you find design so intricate, so purposeful, that the honest heart is drawn to ask who thought of it. The hand of the Lord has wrought this.
Creation is God's first and most universal sermon. Long before anyone reads a Bible, the monarch's migration, the bird's song, the ordered beauty of a leaf are all quietly declaring that there is a Maker. Scripture says this witness leaves everyone without excuse, because the evidence of a Designer is written across the natural world for anyone willing to look. The same God whose wisdom guides a butterfly to a forest it has never seen is wise enough to guide your life, too. If He does not forget the monarch, He has certainly not forgotten you.
Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to the sermon You have written into creation. In the design of the smallest creature we see Your wisdom and care. If You guide the butterfly home across a continent, teach us to trust that You are guiding us. Amen.
